The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC), has taken a major step toward modernizing Africa’s agricultural sector with a high-level session focused on the implementation of the African Union Digital Agriculture Strategy (DAS) 2024–2030.
Held virtually, the session brought together representatives from AU member states, international finance institutions, private sector stakeholders, and farmer associations. The event marks a key milestone in advancing policy coordination and investment readiness around digital solutions in agriculture.
The DAS serves as a strategic roadmap to help African countries develop and implement national digital agriculture plans. These include tools such as precision farming, blockchain for supply chain traceability, satellite-based monitoring, mobile advisory platforms, and AI-powered data systems designed to improve productivity and climate resilience in the sector.
The strategy also places emphasis on inclusive access, aiming to ensure that smallholder farmers, women, and youth are not left behind in the digital transformation of agriculture. Discussions during the session explored country-level applications, with input from government officials in Senegal and Uganda, regional bodies, and development partners like the World Bank.

For investors and technology companies, the DAS presents a sizable opportunity. National domestication of the strategy is expected to drive demand for digital infrastructure, agri-tech services, rural connectivity, and education platforms. Public-private partnerships will be key to scaling implementation, particularly in areas such as digital extension services, climate-smart farming tools, and market access platforms.
The FAO and AU announced that a follow-up event will be held later in 2025 to track country progress and investment alignment. The session aligns with broader continental goals under Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reinforcing digital agriculture as a critical lever for food security, employment, and economic growth.
