Byron Trott Backs Rural Education and Career Pathways With $100 Million Investment

Billionaire investment banker Byron Trott and his family philanthropy have committed around $100 million to expanding educational and career opportunities for students in rural and small town America, according to The Wall Street Journal. The investment is supporting initiatives that place dedicated college and career advisers in rural high schools, helping students navigate higher education, vocational training and employment opportunities after graduation. Trott launched the rootEd Alliance in 2018 after his own experience growing up in a small Missouri community shaped his focus on expanding opportunity beyond major population centres.

The rootEd programme has placed career advisers across rural high schools in seven US states, targeting communities where students often have less access to specialised guidance than their urban counterparts. Data from the programme indicates that students with access to an adviser are nearly 30 percent more likely to pursue college or career training after graduation and 54 percent less likely to enter low skill jobs.

The funding is also supporting broader efforts to create stronger pathways from rural schools into higher education. In 2024, the Trott Family Philanthropies provided $20 million to support the STARS College Network, a coalition involving 16 universities designed to help students from small towns and rural communities enrol in, succeed at and graduate from college. Separately, a $100 million gift has established the Trott Center for Excellence in Rural America at the University of Chicago, further expanding the philanthropic focus on rural opportunity and research.

For Trott, whose career included nearly three decades at Goldman Sachs before becoming co-CEO of BDT and MSD Partners, the initiative reflects a broader effort to address the opportunity gap facing young people outside major US cities, Bloomberg reported. By combining career guidance, university access and workforce preparation, the programmes aim to ensure that geography does not determine whether rural students can access the education and skills needed to participate in higher value careers.
