Denmark and Greece Back Morocco’s Western Sahara Autonomy Plan in Diplomatic Boost for Rabat

Denmark and Greece have strengthened Morocco’s diplomatic position over Western Sahara after both European countries formally reaffirmed support for Rabat’s autonomy proposal as a credible framework for resolving the long running dispute, according to Business Insider Africa. Denmark described the initiative as a serious and credible contribution to the United Nations process and a good basis for a mutually agreed solution, while Greece said Morocco’s proposal could represent the most feasible path toward a definitive settlement.

Denmark’s endorsement carries particular significance because Copenhagen currently holds a seat on the United Nations Security Council. Its position adds to a growing European shift toward viewing Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a central basis for negotiations, following similar positions from major European powers and the European Union. The endorsements, however, do not amount to formal recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.

For Rabat, the latest statements strengthen its strategy of building international acceptance around autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty while narrowing diplomatic space for competing positions backed by the Polisario Front and Algeria. The issue remains unresolved under the United Nations framework, which continues to seek a political settlement that is just, lasting and mutually acceptable while respecting the principle of self determination.

The growing European support could also deepen Morocco’s diplomatic and economic relationships with European partners, particularly as Rabat positions the disputed territory within its wider development and investment strategy. The latest endorsements therefore represent more than symbolic diplomatic gains, giving Morocco additional momentum as negotiations over Western Sahara enter a period of increasingly defined international positions.
