Meloni Heads to Algeria as LNG Disruptions from Qatar Trigger Supply Shift

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is set to visit Algeria as Rome moves to secure alternative gas supplies following disruptions to liquefied natural gas flows from Qatar, amid escalating tensions linked to the Iran conflict, according to Reuters reports.

The crisis has significantly impacted Qatar’s export capacity, with damage to key infrastructure expected to take a portion of supply offline for years, tightening global LNG markets and raising concerns over energy security across Europe.

Italy, which relies on imports for the bulk of its energy needs, is accelerating diversification efforts, with Algeria already emerging as a key supplier alongside other partners. The North African nation has strengthened its position as a strategic energy partner for Europe in recent years.

The developments highlight the vulnerability of global gas supply chains to geopolitical shocks, with industry leaders warning that prolonged disruptions could reshape long-term energy strategies and investment decisions across the LNG market.
