Netflix is expanding the universe of its global hit series Stranger Things with a new live-action prequel titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, scheduled to debut in 2028, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Announced on November 6 during the franchise’s annual Stranger Things Day celebration, the series will transport viewers to the 1950s, decades before the events of the original show and the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Set in the fictional town of Marion, Nevada, the new production will introduce an entirely different ensemble of characters, with a fresh setting, new heroes and villains, and an expanded supernatural mythology. Netflix has confirmed that production will take place in New Mexico, while casting details are yet to be announced.
The project brings together original Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer and longtime franchise writer Kate Trefry, who will serve as co-creator, showrunner and writer. Trefry previously wrote The First Shadow, the acclaimed stage production exploring the early history of Henry Creel. British filmmaker Joe Wright, known for directing Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and Darkest Hour, will direct the first three episodes and serve as an executive producer. Shawn Levy will also return as an executive producer alongside the Duffer Brothers through Upside Down Pictures and other members of the production team. The creative team has described the series as a distinct story that retains the atmosphere and storytelling identity of the original franchise while exploring a different era and mythology.
The announcement represents another expansion of one of Netflix’s most recognisable entertainment properties. Since its debut in 2016, Stranger Things has developed into a global franchise, extending beyond its original television run into animation, theatre, merchandise and immersive fan experiences. Other Worlds will explore a period that predates both the original series and The First Shadow, offering an opportunity to examine the origins of the franchise’s supernatural mythology through a new cast and storyline. With its 2028 release window, the prequel gives Netflix another major title around which to sustain audience engagement and extend the commercial life of the Stranger Things universe.
