Zainab Sumu Redefining Contemporary African Art and Textile Storytelling

Zainab Sumu is a Sierra Leonean contemporary artist and founder of Znabu, a creative practice that blends textiles, sculpture, and visual storytelling to explore African identity and cultural memory. Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Zainab Sumu has emerged as a distinctive voice in global contemporary art, using material, pattern, and symbolism to bridge heritage with modern artistic expression.

Zainab Sumu’s journey is rooted in both artistic exploration and cultural preservation. Born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, she draws deeply from West African traditions, integrating influences from architecture, music, and indigenous practices such as basket weaving and ceremonial symbolism into her work. She studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where she refined her approach to textiles and visual language, developing a multidisciplinary practice that spans fiber sculpture, painting, and design.
