Charles Oghogho Oronsaye Jr., widely known as King Africana, is a Nigerian haute couture designer, entrepreneur and creative director whose work has become synonymous with a modern expression of African luxury. As the Founder and Creative Director of Africana Couture, King Africana has spent more than a decade challenging conventional ideas about African fashion, building a brand that goes beyond clothing to explore culture, identity, lifestyle and the business of African creativity. From its beginnings as a menswear label, Africana has evolved into a growing fashion and lifestyle ecosystem with a presence across major African cities.

King Africana’s route into fashion was anything but conventional. A trained lawyer and former music and media personality, he initially explored entertainment before recognising the commercial possibilities of fashion. While still a university student at the University of Benin, he began experimenting with clothing and leveraging the audience he had built through social media and entertainment. What started as a small fashion venture eventually became Africana Couture, launched in 2011 with a clear philosophy of placing African aesthetics and craftsmanship at the centre of the modern wardrobe. His early approach was deliberately entrepreneurial: he used his network, creativity and personal brand to secure clients and build demand before eventually establishing a physical presence.
Under his creative direction, Africana has expanded from bespoke menswear into a broader retail and lifestyle proposition. The launch of Africana X introduced a more accessible ready-to-wear expression of the brand, while Africana X Store extended the company’s offering beyond couture into a curated African lifestyle experience. The wider Africana ecosystem has since expanded into Africana House Lagos, alongside operations in Abidjan and Dakar, reflecting King Africana’s ambition to build an African fashion brand with regional reach rather than one confined to a single market. The company’s footprint has also been connected to a growing team and ecosystem around fashion, retail, design and creative enterprise.

What makes King Africana’s journey particularly compelling is his understanding that African fashion can become more than an industry of garments. He has consistently positioned Africana as a cultural statement and a vehicle for changing perceptions of African craftsmanship. His vision has included building African measurement systems, championing indigenous fabrics and creating fashion experiences that place African identity at the centre rather than treating it as an aesthetic afterthought. His work has earned attention from platforms including Forbes Africa, while his leadership has seen Africana recognised as a brand pushing the boundaries of African fashion and lifestyle.

His entrepreneurial philosophy has also increasingly extended into social impact. In 2023, King Africana launched the Africana 17 Charitable Foundation, with an initial project aimed at raising funds for dialysis machines and supporting free treatment at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. The initiative reflected his belief that fashion and culture can become tools for broader social development. At the same time, Africana has continued investing in the next generation of African creative talent, including a six-month fashion design training programme launched under the TVET framework in 2026.

Today, King Africana represents a generation of African creative entrepreneurs determined to build brands that are not simply inspired by Africa but built from an African point of view and designed for the world. Through Africana Couture, Africana X, Africana House and its expanding regional footprint, he is constructing an ecosystem where fashion, culture, retail and enterprise intersect. His story is ultimately about more than clothing; it is about building an institution around an idea that African creativity can be premium, commercially powerful and globally relevant on its own terms.
