Turkey Moves to Sign Deal with Russia to Boost Fertilizer Trade

Turkey is preparing to deepen its fertilizer trade with Russia as both countries seek to strengthen agricultural supply chains amid heightened geopolitical and market pressures. Agricultural trade between Russia and Turkey increased by more than 30 percent year on year in the first half of 2026, while trade in mineral fertilizers nearly doubled in 2025, highlighting the growing importance of the sector to bilateral commerce.

The expected agreement comes as Turkey remains heavily dependent on imported fertilizer and faces renewed supply risks following disruptions across key global shipping and production routes. Turkish authorities have taken measures to protect fertilizer availability and agricultural production, while Russia remains one of Turkey’s major suppliers of agricultural commodities.

For Russia, closer access to the Turkish market provides an important outlet for its fertilizer exports at a time when Western restrictions continue to reshape global agricultural trade. The European Union, for example, maintains anti dumping duties on certain Russian fertilizer products, while broader trade measures have encouraged Moscow to strengthen relationships with markets outside the Western bloc.

For Turkey, securing additional Russian supplies could help stabilise fertilizer availability and reduce exposure to disruptions in other producing regions, with potential implications for farming costs and food prices. The deal would also reinforce the broader economic relationship between Ankara and Moscow, which has expanded across agriculture, energy and other strategic sectors despite Turkey’s continued membership of NATO and ties with Western markets, Bloomberg reported.
