World Cup prize pool nears $900m as FIFA boosts payouts for 2026 tournament

FIFA is set to distribute nearly $900 million to teams participating in the 2026 World Cup, following a significant increase in financial allocations driven by the tournament’s commercial success. The total payout has been raised to about $871 million, up roughly 15% from earlier projections, as reported by Reuters.

The expanded prize pool builds on a previously announced $727 million fund and reflects growing revenues tied to the tournament’s new 48-team format, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. FIFA confirmed that the increase includes higher preparation fees and participation payments for all teams, alongside performance-based rewards.

Under the updated structure, each team will receive increased funding to cover logistics and operational costs, with qualification payments rising to about $10 million and preparation grants also boosted. The tournament winners are expected to earn around $50 million, reinforcing the financial incentives tied to deeper progression in the competition.

The payout increase comes as FIFA prepares for what is projected to be the most lucrative World Cup in history, with expanded matches, sponsorships, and broadcast deals driving record revenues. The Guardian says the near-$900 million prize pool highlights the growing commercial scale of global football while also addressing concerns from national teams over rising participation costs.
