US leads Africa’s largest military drill with 5,000 troops from over 40 nations

The United States has launched its largest annual military exercise in Africa, bringing together more than 5,000 troops from over 40 countries in a масштаб multinational operation aimed at strengthening security cooperation. The exercise, known as African Lion 2026, is being conducted across multiple locations including Morocco, Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia, as stated by United States Africa Command.

Led jointly by the U.S. and Moroccan armed forces, the drills are designed to improve interoperability between African, NATO, and allied militaries through coordinated land, air, sea, and cyber operations. Officials say the exercise tests rapid deployment capabilities and prepares participating forces for complex, multi-domain threats, as highlighted by Business Insider Africa.

African Lion has grown into the largest U.S.-led military exercise on the continent since its launch in 2004, reflecting Washington’s long-term strategy to deepen defence partnerships across Africa. The programme includes not only combat training but also humanitarian missions, disaster response simulations, and technology-driven warfare scenarios.

The scale of participation underscores increasing global interest in African security dynamics, particularly as geopolitical competition intensifies and regional threats evolve. Analysts say such exercises play a critical role in building coordinated responses to terrorism, instability, and emerging security challenges across the continent.
