Sudan’s Cholera Outbreak Deepens Economic Strain Amid Conflict

Sudan is facing a sharp rise in cholera cases as the war continues to devastate its health system and economy. According to AP News, more than 2,300 new infections and 40 deaths were reported in Darfur in just one week, bringing total suspected cases since July 2024 to nearly 99,700 with 2,470 fatalities.

The World Health Organization has warned that hunger and disease are spreading rapidly, with cholera infections also detected among refugees in eastern Chad. According to Reuters, the scale of the outbreak underscores the collapse of basic services and the growing regional spillover effects of Sudan’s war.

Authorities in Khartoum have launched a 10-day vaccination drive targeting 150,000 people, building on earlier mass campaigns that reached 2.2 million. According to AP News, the effort is aimed at slowing transmission in urban centers where overcrowding and poor sanitation are worsening conditions.

The outbreak poses fresh risks to Sudan’s struggling economy, where businesses face disruptions from widespread illness, strained supply chains, and limited humanitarian access. According to Reuters, investor confidence remains weak as instability continues to undermine operational continuity across agriculture, trade, and services.

Analysts say the combination of conflict and health emergencies threatens to deepen Sudan’s dependence on international aid while further deterring foreign investment. According to AP News, the crisis highlights the urgent need for international funding, though UN appeals remain significantly underfinanced.
