Oluyemi Oluleke Osinbajo SAN GCON is a Nigerian lawyer, professor, pastor, public intellectual, and statesman who served as the 14th Vice President of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023. Widely respected for his academic brilliance, legal expertise, and role in governance, Osinbajo emerged as one of the most influential political figures of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, combining scholarship, public service, and policy leadership across national and international platforms.
Born Oluyemi Oluleke Osinbajo on March 8, 1957, in Lagos, Nigeria, he attended Corona School before proceeding to Igbobi College, Yaba, where he distinguished himself academically and won several prizes including the State Merit Award, the Adeoba Prize for English Oratory, and the African Statesman Intercollegiate Best Speaker’s Prize. He later studied law at the University of Lagos, graduating with a Second Class Upper degree and winning the Graham Douglas Prize for Commercial Law. He subsequently earned a Master of Laws degree from the London School of Economics.

Following his legal training at the Nigerian Law School, Osinbajo began a distinguished career spanning academia, legal practice, and public service. He lectured at the University of Lagos and later became Professor of Law and Head of the Department of Public Law. Over the years, he built a strong reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading legal scholars and experts in public law, corporate law, and the law of evidence. He also became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), one of the country’s highest legal distinctions.
His entry into major public office came in 1999 when he was appointed Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. During his eight year tenure, he played a significant role in judicial reforms, legal modernization, and justice sector transformation in Lagos State, helping establish structures that later became reference points for governance reforms across Nigeria.
In 2015, Osinbajo was selected as the running mate to Muhammadu Buhari under the All Progressives Congress. Their victory in the presidential election led to his inauguration as Vice President of Nigeria, a position he held for two consecutive terms until 2023. During his tenure, he became known for his active engagement in economic policy, social investment programmes, digital innovation advocacy, and national development planning.

Osinbajo also drew national and international attention during periods when he served as Acting President while President Buhari was on medical leave. His leadership style during those moments was widely described as energetic and reform oriented, particularly in areas concerning economic management, security coordination, and governance decisions. One of his notable directives included encouraging international oil companies operating in the Niger Delta to relocate operational headquarters closer to host communities to support regional development and reduce tensions.
Beyond politics, Prof. Osinbajo remains deeply connected to academia, law, and faith. He is a pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God and has consistently balanced public service with religious and intellectual engagements. He is also a member of professional bodies including the Nigerian Bar Association, International Bar Association, Nigerian Body of Benchers, and the Council of Legal Education in Nigeria.

His achievements and recognitions span several decades. In 2015, he received the national honor of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), one of Nigeria’s highest national distinctions. In 2019, the Emir of Daura conferred on him the traditional title of Danmadamin Daura, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most trustworthy vice presidents. In 2022, he was named the first National Nutrition Vanguard of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the Nutrition Society of Nigeria for his role in advancing nutrition and food systems advocacy.
Following his tenure as Vice President, Osinbajo has continued to expand his influence globally through policy advocacy, climate action, energy transition initiatives, and international development engagements. He currently serves on several international advisory and governance platforms focused on sustainable development and Africa’s economic future.
Looking ahead, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo remains one of Nigeria’s most respected public intellectuals and statesmen. Through law, governance, academia, and public policy, he has built a legacy defined by scholarship, reform, and national service, cementing his place among the leading voices shaping Nigeria’s modern political and intellectual landscape.
