Morocco surpasses South Africa as Africa’s top industrial economy in AfDB report

Morocco has overtaken South Africa as Africa’s leading industrial economy, according to a new report released by the African Development Bank and reported by Business Insider Africa. The development marks a significant shift in the continent’s industrial landscape and highlights Morocco’s rapid rise as a manufacturing and export powerhouse.

The AfDB report pointed to Morocco’s strong performance in automotive manufacturing, aerospace, renewable energy, industrial infrastructure, and export-oriented production as key drivers behind the country’s ascent. Analysts say Morocco has successfully positioned itself as a strategic industrial gateway connecting Africa, Europe, and the Middle East through aggressive investment policies and modern logistics infrastructure.

Morocco has attracted major global manufacturers in sectors including automobiles, electronics, textiles, and aviation, with companies increasingly using the country as a production base for international markets. Industry observers note that investments in ports, rail systems, renewable energy projects, and industrial zones have strengthened the country’s competitiveness over the past decade.

The report also reflects broader structural challenges facing South Africa’s industrial sector, including energy shortages, logistics bottlenecks, slower economic growth, and declining manufacturing competitiveness. Economic experts say the shift signals changing industrial dynamics across Africa as countries increasingly compete for global supply chain investments tied to manufacturing, clean energy, and strategic trade corridors.
