Nigeria appoints Taiwo Oyedele as finance minister in cabinet reshuffle

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has appointed Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy following a cabinet reshuffle announced on April 21, 2026. The move sees Oyedele replace Wale Edun, who has been directed to hand over his duties, as reported by Reuters.

Oyedele, who previously served as Minister of State for Finance, was elevated to the top role after a brief tenure in the ministry. He is also known for leading Nigeria’s Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he played a key role in shaping efforts to streamline the country’s tax system and improve revenue generation.

The reshuffle is part of broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to strengthen economic management amid ongoing fiscal reforms and macroeconomic pressures. It also included changes in other ministries, reflecting a strategic recalibration of the Federal Executive Council.

Oyedele’s appointment signals a continued focus on tax reform, fiscal discipline, and economic restructuring. His leadership will be closely watched as Nigeria seeks to boost revenue, reduce reliance on borrowing, and stabilise its economy in a challenging global environment.
