Meta Unveils More Affordable AI Glasses as Wearable Tech Competition Intensifies

Meta Platforms has launched a new line of AI-powered smart glasses starting at $299, significantly lowering the entry price for consumers as competition in the wearable technology market accelerates. As reported by Reuters, the new Meta Glasses were developed in partnership with eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica and are designed to expand adoption of AI-enabled wearables beyond the premium segment currently dominated by higher-priced devices.

Unlike Meta’s previous smart glasses, which carried the Ray-Ban and Oakley brands, the new collection is marketed under the Meta name and features a range of new frame styles, including designs created in collaboration with media personality Kylie Jenner. Reuters noted that the glasses incorporate Meta AI technology powered by the company’s new Muse Spark model and offer features such as hands-free photography, video recording, voice interaction, phone calls, music playback, and live translation capabilities.

The launch comes as the race to dominate the next generation of personal computing devices intensifies. Industry data cited by Reuters shows that global smart-glasses shipments reached approximately 9.6 million units last year, with Meta accounting for more than 76% of the market. At the same time, competitors including Snap, Google, and Apple are investing heavily in AI-powered eyewear, with Snap recently unveiling its high-end augmented reality Specs device and Apple reportedly developing its own smart glasses platform.

For Meta, the lower-priced offering reflects a broader strategy to make AI-powered wearables mainstream while strengthening its leadership position in a rapidly evolving market. Analysts cited by CNN and TechCrunch say affordability, comfort, and fashion appeal will be critical factors in driving widespread adoption. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into everyday devices, smart glasses are emerging as one of the most closely watched categories in the global technology industry.
