The Recording Academy has announced the addition of five new Grammy categories for the 2027 awards, marking another step in its efforts to recognize the growing diversity of global music. The expansion comes two years after the introduction of the Best African Music Performance category, which gave African music a dedicated place at the Grammys for the first time and reflected the worldwide rise of genres such as Afrobeats and Amapiano.
The new categories include Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best Latin Song, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, and Best Traditional Folk Album. According to AP News and BBC, the additions were driven by member proposals and are designed to better represent the evolving global music landscape while creating more opportunities for artists, songwriters, and producers across a wider range of genres and traditions.
The move builds on the success of the Best African Music Performance category, which debuted at the 2024 Grammy Awards and was first won by Tyla for her global hit Water. The category has since been won by Tems and again by Tyla, highlighting the increasing international influence of African artists. Industry observers say the dedicated African category helped accelerate recognition for music from the continent while broadening the Grammys’ global appeal.
For the music industry, the latest expansion signals the Grammys’ continued shift toward a more globally representative awards structure. Analysts note that as streaming platforms break down geographical barriers and international genres gain mainstream audiences, award institutions are under growing pressure to reflect changing listening habits. The new categories are expected to attract greater participation from artists across Asia, Latin America, Africa, and other emerging music markets when the 69th Grammy Awards take place in February 2027.
