Gates Foundation and OpenAI Launch AI Health Initiative Across African Countries

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has partnered with OpenAI to roll out a new artificial intelligence programme aimed at strengthening primary healthcare systems across Africa, with an initial focus on Rwanda. The initiative will deploy AI tools to support frontline health workers in areas such as patient triage, referrals and access to clinical information, according to Reuters, which reported that the programme is designed to complement overstretched health systems rather than replace medical professionals.

The partnership, known as Horizon 1000, is expected to reach about 1,000 primary healthcare facilities and surrounding communities over the coming years. The Gates Foundation said the project will work closely with African governments and health ministries to identify practical applications of AI that can improve service delivery, as outlined by Reuters. The initiative comes as many African countries face persistent shortages of trained healthcare workers and limited access to up-to-date medical resources.

Bill Gates said artificial intelligence could help close gaps in care by giving health workers better decision-support tools and faster access to reliable information, noting that sub-Saharan Africa faces a significant shortfall in healthcare personnel. OpenAI said its role will focus on providing safe, clinically relevant AI systems that are adapted to local needs and constraints, as reported by Reuters.

Health experts say the collaboration reflects growing interest from global technology and philanthropic organisations in applying AI to public health challenges in emerging markets. The partners said the programme will be expanded to additional African countries once pilot deployments demonstrate clear benefits, according to statements cited by Reuters.
