Dangote Refinery Resumes Naira Petrol Sales After Supply Disruption

Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery has resumed petrol sales in naira after briefly suspending them due to crude supply constraints. The move was confirmed in a notice issued on September 28, 2025, following intervention from the chairman of the Naira-for-Crude Technical Committee, as reported by Reuters.

The refinery had announced a suspension just a day earlier, citing unsustainable excesses in naira-based transactions beyond its crude allocation. The temporary halt raised concerns over fuel availability, potential price spikes, and renewed pressure on Nigeria’s already strained foreign exchange reserves, Reuters noted.

In its updated directive, Dangote instructed marketers to resume placing orders in naira, with the option of either self-collection or free delivery to designated depots nationwide. The Guardian reported that the reversal came after the Naira-for-Crude Committee facilitated an agreement to address the allocation issues that triggered the halt.

“This intervention allows us to continue supplying petrol in naira while ensuring alignment with crude allocation limits,” the refinery said in its statement, emphasising that the arrangement was aimed at stabilising the domestic fuel market.

Analysts caution that while the resumption may ease immediate concerns, persistent crude supply challenges could still affect the refinery’s ability to sustain steady domestic output. With Dangote balancing export ambitions against Nigeria’s local fuel needs, the effectiveness of coordination between regulators and the refinery will remain central to market stability.
