Congo to Resume Cobalt Exports, Stands on Upholding Quota System

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has announced that cobalt exports will resume within days, reinforcing the country’s commitment to its newly established quota system. According to a statement from the Ministry of Mines, the measure aims to ensure sustainable production while safeguarding revenues from the strategic metal.

Industry sources told Reuters that the government’s quota framework is designed to stabilize global cobalt supply and encourage responsible mining practices. Analysts highlighted that Congo controls more than 60% of the world’s cobalt production, making the enforcement of quotas a critical factor for the global electric vehicle and battery sectors, as noted by Bloomberg.

The resumption of exports under the regulated system is expected to restore confidence among international buyers and investors, who had been awaiting clarity on the government’s approach following recent policy changes.
