Cameroon’s Internet Access Disrupted Amid Election Protests

Internet access across Cameroon has been significantly disrupted as protests continue over alleged irregularities in the October 12 presidential election, according to the monitoring group NetBlocks.

The disruptions followed the Constitutional Council’s decision to dismiss all petitions challenging the election results, effectively clearing the way for long-time President Paul Biya, aged 92, to retain his position after more than four decades in power. Demonstrations broke out in major cities including Maroua and Garoua, with reports of clashes between opposition supporters and security forces.

NetBlocks stated that the connectivity issues are “ongoing and significant,” warning that the disruptions could hinder real-time reporting and communication across affected regions. The group added that both mobile and fixed-line networks were impacted, suggesting possible deliberate interference amid the escalating unrest.

For investors and businesses, the situation raises broader concerns about the reliability of digital infrastructure and the risks political instability poses to economic activity. As trade and financial operations become increasingly reliant on online systems, such disruptions underscore the growing intersection between governance, security, and economic resilience.
