Awele Elumelu Advancing Healthcare, Leadership, and Social Impact Across Africa

Dr. Awele Vivien Elumelu is a visionary Nigerian leader whose work bridges healthcare, corporate governance, and social empowerment. As the founder and CEO of Avon Healthcare Limited and co-founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, she has dedicated her career to improving healthcare access, supporting entrepreneurship, and fostering sustainable development across Africa.

Born on 23 June 1970 in Lagos, Nigeria, Elumelu earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Benin. She practised medicine in Nigeria at Lagos University Teaching Hospital and in the United Kingdom at Grantham and District Hospital, gaining invaluable clinical experience that would shape her later leadership in healthcare management.

In 2017, she established Avon Healthcare Limited, a network of hospitals and clinics dedicated to delivering quality healthcare and affordable health insurance to individuals and corporate clients. She also chairs Heirs Insurance Brokers and serves as a founding director of Heirs Holdings Limited, a pan-African investment company with interests spanning healthcare, energy, hospitality, and finance. Through these roles, she has demonstrated how strategic business leadership can drive social and economic impact.

Elumelu’s philanthropic influence is profound. As co-founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, she has supported tens of thousands of African entrepreneurs through training, mentorship, and seed capital, fostering economic inclusion and community development. Her public health advocacy includes her role as Private Sector Champion for Immunisation in Africa for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, championing access to vaccines across the continent.

Her contributions have earned national recognition. In 2023, she was conferred the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) for her impact on healthcare, enterprise, and public service. She has also been appointed Chair of Transcorp Hotels Plc, effective January 2026, highlighting her influence in corporate governance across sectors.

Dr. Awele Elumelu embodies leadership that combines professional excellence with social responsibility. By advancing healthcare delivery, empowering entrepreneurs, and promoting inclusive development, she continues to create transformative impact and inspire a generation of African leaders to envision business and philanthropy as forces for lasting societal change.
