At Least 35 Killed in Nigeria Fuel Tanker Explosion, Road Safety Agency Confirms

A tragic fuel tanker explosion in Niger State, north-central Nigeria, has claimed at least 35 lives and left 46 others injured, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). The incident occurred on Tuesday along the Bida–Agaie road in Katcha Local Government Area when a tanker transporting petrol overturned and caught fire as residents attempted to scoop fuel from the spill, as reported by Vanguard Nigeria.

Eyewitnesses said the fire quickly spread, engulfing nearby vehicles and homes, with many victims burnt beyond recognition. The FRSC described the incident as a preventable tragedy, reiterating warnings against the dangerous practice of collecting spilled fuel at crash sites, as highlighted by Gazette Nigeria.

The tanker was reportedly en route from Lagos to the northern region when the driver lost control, leading to the fatal crash. Local reports indicate that more than 30 tanker-related accidents have occurred on the same route this month, raising concerns over road safety and regulatory enforcement, according to Sahara Reporters.

Analysts say the explosion underscores persistent challenges in Nigeria’s petroleum transport sector, including deteriorating road infrastructure, inadequate safety standards, and the economic strain caused by fuel distribution hazards. Beyond the immediate loss of lives, such incidents disrupt logistics chains vital to national and regional commerce.
