Arese Ugwu The Financial Storyteller Taking Smart Money From Books to the Capital Market

Arese Ugwu has spent much of her career making money conversations easier to understand, more relatable and increasingly relevant to African audiences. Now, the financial expert, entrepreneur, bestselling author and television producer is taking that mission into a new chapter as Acting Managing Director of NASD Plc, Nigeria’s over the counter securities exchange. Her appointment in September 2026 places a woman who built a powerful financial literacy movement through storytelling at the helm of an institution focused on connecting businesses with capital and investors with opportunities. The appointment remains subject to approval by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Arese Ugwu first built her public profile through Smart Money Africa, a personal finance platform created to make wealth creation and financial literacy more accessible to African millennials. Her breakthrough came with The Smart Money Woman, the 2016 bestselling book that followed the financial journeys of five African women navigating money, relationships, careers, entrepreneurship and lifestyle. The book became the foundation for a much larger intellectual property franchise, eventually becoming the Smart Money Woman television series, which streamed on Africa Magic and Netflix. Arese Ugwu subsequently produced a second season for YouTube, demonstrating how she has consistently used storytelling to turn financial education into entertainment and culture.

Her influence has extended beyond publishing and television. Arese Ugwu has worked with major African and international brands including Standard Chartered, GTBank, First Bank, Mastercard, Unilever and Bamboo, while her Smart Money Tribe podcast reached number one on Apple’s Top Shows Podcast List during its first week. She has also appeared on platforms including CNN, Bloomberg and Forbes Africa and was recognised in 2021 among the Most Influential People of African Descent. Her academic foundation includes a BSc in Business and Management from Aston Business School and an MSc in Economic Development from University College London, alongside executive education at Lagos Business School and INSEAD.

What makes Arese Ugwu’s career distinctive is the way she has repeatedly crossed boundaries between finance and popular culture. She understood early that financial literacy could not remain confined to technical language, investment reports or traditional advisory spaces. By placing money conversations inside relatable stories, characters and everyday experiences, she created a platform that resonated with a wider African audience, particularly women seeking practical pathways towards financial independence. Her work has subsequently contributed to a broader conversation around wealth creation, investing, entrepreneurship and economic empowerment.

Her appointment at NASD now brings that experience into Nigeria’s capital market infrastructure. NASD is pursuing a broader growth strategy focused on capital formation, enterprise development, digital innovation and increased investor participation, with Arese Ugwu saying her vision is to make the market a place where Nigeria’s growth businesses can access capital while investors participate in the value they create. It represents a notable convergence of the two worlds she has spent years navigating: helping people understand money and helping businesses understand the opportunities that capital can unlock.

Arese Ugwu’s journey is therefore more than the story of an author who successfully moved into television or a financial professional who entered the media space. It is the story of a creative entrepreneur who built an entire language around money and wealth, then carried that influence into increasingly significant platforms. From The Smart Money Woman to Smart Money Africa and now the leadership of NASD, Arese Ugwu continues to demonstrate how financial expertise, storytelling and entrepreneurship can intersect to create influence that reaches both the individual and the wider economy.
