Wanle Akinboboye: Pioneering Cultural Tourism and Creative Enterprise in Africa

Few figures have shaped African tourism and culture as profoundly as Wanle Akinboboye. Through vision, innovation, and unwavering belief in the continent’s creative potential, he has transformed the idea of tourism from simple recreation into a platform for empowerment and cultural rebirth. As the founder and president of La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort and the global initiative Motherland Beckons, Akinboboye’s work bridges hospitality, heritage, and economic opportunity across Africa and the diaspora.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, on August 16, 1958, Akinboboye’s journey reflects a unique blend of education, passion, and purpose. He attended St. Joseph’s College in Ondo before earning a diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Kaduna Polytechnic. He later studied Business Management at Bowie State University in the United States and obtained a master’s degree in hospitality management from Florida International University in Miami. When he returned to Nigeria, he dedicated himself to promoting Africa’s image and heritage through what he calls the SET philosophy of Security, Entertainment, and Tourism.

In 1984, Akinboboye established La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos. Spanning 65 acres of pristine beachfront, forest, and lagoon, the resort is regarded as the world’s first African themed nature and cultural destination. Designed with indigenous architecture, local craftsmanship, and Afrocentric aesthetics, La Campagne Tropicana has become a global showcase for African hospitality and a model for community-based tourism. According to The Guardian Nigeria, the resort has provided jobs for thousands of Nigerians and inspired local enterprise among artisans, farmers, and tour operators.

Akinboboye’s creativity continues to drive innovation within the sector. Recent additions to the resort include a 120 metre beachfront swimming pool, transparent kayaks, floating beds, and an eco-friendly wooden jetty, all designed using locally sourced materials. These developments, as reported by The Guardian Nigeria, demonstrate his belief that sustainability and culture can coexist within luxury tourism.

Beyond La Campagne, Akinboboye has launched multiple initiatives aimed at youth development and continental integration. In 2023, he unveiled the Youth African Tourism Expedition, an initiative encouraging young Africans to explore destinations, acquire hospitality skills, and build entrepreneurship through travel. He has also introduced the Corporate African Eco Retreat and several other cultural tourism concepts that promote self-employment and innovation within the industry. According to The Gazelle News, these initiatives are part of his promise to unveil 52 tourism products designed to transform the sector.

His achievements have earned him numerous awards. In 2025, he was named Tourism Personality of the Year in Nigeria at the Akwaaba African Travel Market, while La Campagne Tropicana received the Best Resort in Nigeria 2024–2025 award, as reported by New Telegraph Nigeria. He was also nominated as Advisor to the African Union Economic, Social, and Cultural Council on Agenda 2063 and was conferred with a Supreme Chieftaincy title by communities in Côte d’Ivoire for his contributions to African tourism development.

Wanle Akinboboye’s vision for tourism is deeply African, rooted in heritage and humanity. Through his work, he continues to prove that Africa’s greatest export is not just its landscapes or wildlife, but its people, culture, and creative spirit. His story is one of persistence, innovation, and pride, a testament to how cultural entrepreneurship can build both economies and identities.
