Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens push to expand football empire into France

Nassef Sawiris and his Aston Villa co-owner Wes Edens are reportedly in advanced negotiations to expand their growing football empire into France through a potential investment in Ligue 2 side FC Annecy. The discussions form part of the duo’s wider multi-club ownership strategy under their V Sports investment platform, as reported by The Athletic and Business Insider Africa.

The proposed deal could see V Sports acquire a minority stake in FC Annecy, with the possibility of increasing its involvement over time. Analysts say the move would strengthen the group’s growing international football network, which already includes interests linked to clubs and football operations across England, Portugal, Spain, and other markets.

Sawiris and Edens transformed Aston Villa after taking control in 2018, overseeing the club’s return to European competition and significant commercial growth. Their broader strategy mirrors the increasingly popular multi-club ownership model used by global investors to develop talent pipelines, improve scouting systems, and create long-term operational synergies between clubs.

France has emerged as an attractive market for football investors due to its strong player development system and comparatively lower club valuations relative to other major European leagues. Market observers say an expansion into French football could further position Sawiris and Edens among the most influential private investors in the global football industry.
