Uganda’s Museveni Seeks Seventh Term, Extending Four-Decade Grip on Power

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has confirmed he will seek a seventh term in office, a move that could extend his leadership beyond four decades if he wins elections scheduled for January 2026. Museveni, who has ruled since 1986, said another mandate is necessary to safeguard stability and continue economic transformation efforts, according to remarks reported by Reuters.

The bid follows constitutional amendments that removed presidential term limits in 2005 and age limits in 2017, reforms that cleared the path for Museveni, now in his early 80s, to remain in power. Analysts note that while Uganda has recorded periods of macroeconomic stability and infrastructure expansion under his rule, political space has narrowed significantly, with opposition parties frequently citing restrictions on campaigning and civil liberties, as highlighted by Reuters and corroborated by regional political analysts quoted by Polity.org.za.

Museveni is expected to face several challengers, including opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine, who draws strong support from younger voters frustrated by unemployment and governance concerns. However, observers say the ruling National Resistance Movement’s entrenched influence over state institutions gives the incumbent a decisive advantage, according to assessments published by TimesLive.

The election is also taking place amid ongoing debate over succession, with Museveni’s son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, a senior military figure, often mentioned in political discourse as a potential future leader. Diplomats and investors are watching the process closely, as Uganda’s political continuity or disruption could shape confidence in East Africa’s broader economic outlook, according to commentary from APnews.
