Trump Expands Africa Strategy With $500 Million Critical Minerals Investment Initiative

The United States has unveiled a $500 million investment initiative aimed at strengthening access to Africa’s critical minerals, marking the first dedicated funding commitment under President Donald Trump’s Africa strategy. According to Reuters and Business Insider Africa, the initiative will support investments in mining, mineral processing, logistics, and related infrastructure across the continent as Washington seeks to diversify supply chains for minerals essential to electric vehicles, semiconductors, defence systems, and advanced manufacturing. The programme forms part of broader U.S. efforts to reduce dependence on supply chains dominated by China while deepening commercial partnerships with African resource-producing nations.

The investment push builds on a series of recent agreements between the United States and African governments focused on critical minerals. These include partnerships with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, and South Africa, where Washington has backed projects involving copper, cobalt, lithium, rare earth elements, and other strategic minerals. U.S. officials have said the strategy prioritises responsible mining, local value addition, and infrastructure development while encouraging greater private-sector participation across Africa’s mineral value chain.

The initiative also reflects intensifying global competition for critical mineral resources as governments race to secure supplies needed for the energy transition and emerging technologies. China currently dominates much of the global processing and refining market for key minerals, prompting the United States and its allies to increase investments in alternative supply networks. Washington has complemented overseas partnerships with broader domestic policies designed to strengthen critical mineral production and reduce strategic dependence on foreign suppliers.

For Africa, the new investment programme could unlock additional capital for mining, processing, and infrastructure while supporting industrialisation and job creation across mineral-rich economies. Analysts say the success of the initiative will depend on whether investments translate into greater local beneficiation, technology transfer, and long-term economic value rather than simply expanding exports of raw materials. If implemented effectively, the programme could strengthen Africa’s role in global critical mineral supply chains while reshaping economic relations between the continent and the United States.
