Thailand is exploring investments in U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) export projects as it seeks to diversify energy supplies and strengthen long-term fuel security following recent disruptions to global LNG markets. According to Bloomberg, state-owned energy company PTT Plc is in early-stage discussions with developers of U.S. LNG projects, including Woodside Energy’s Louisiana LNG facility, to secure both equity stakes and long-term supply agreements.
The move comes as geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions in the Middle East have prompted major Asian LNG importers to reduce their reliance on traditional suppliers. Thailand, Southeast Asia’s largest LNG importer, has faced higher import costs after disruptions to shipments from the Gulf region, despite maintaining long-term supply contracts with Qatar. PTT confirmed that it is actively evaluating investment opportunities in the United States and other markets as part of its strategy to expand and diversify its global LNG portfolio.
Thailand is also accelerating investment in domestic LNG infrastructure to support rising electricity demand, particularly from new data centres and digital industries. Government officials have indicated that expanding import terminals and securing additional long-term LNG supplies are central to the country’s energy transition strategy as it continues to reduce its dependence on coal while ensuring stable power generation. Analysts say investments in overseas LNG projects would provide Thailand with greater supply security and help mitigate future price volatility.
For Thailand, securing equity in U.S. LNG export projects represents a strategic shift toward greater control over its energy supply chain. Industry observers believe the approach could provide more reliable access to competitively priced LNG while strengthening energy resilience in an increasingly volatile global market. As Asian demand for LNG continues to grow, Thailand’s investment strategy underscores the rising importance of long-term supply partnerships in ensuring future energy security.
