Alibaba’s Qwen family of artificial intelligence models has surpassed 3 billion cumulative downloads, according to Bloomberg, highlighting the rapid global adoption of Chinese open source and open weight AI as competition with US technology companies intensifies. The milestone places Qwen among the most widely distributed AI model families globally, building on Alibaba’s earlier disclosure that Qwen had exceeded 1 billion downloads on Hugging Face in January 2026.
The rapid growth has been supported by Alibaba’s strategy of making several Qwen models widely available to developers, allowing them to download, customise and deploy the technology for different applications. Alibaba has continued releasing new versions of the model family while expanding its AI infrastructure and Model as a Service platform. The company said AI related products accounted for 30% of Alibaba Cloud’s external revenue in the final quarter of fiscal 2026, with cloud revenue growth accelerating to 40%.
The scale of Qwen’s developer adoption is commercially significant because it demonstrates how open weight models can build ecosystems beyond direct consumer applications. Alibaba is competing in an increasingly crowded market that includes Meta, Google, OpenAI and rapidly growing Chinese AI companies, while US technology firms are also stepping up investment in open models. Reuters reported this week that Meta and other American companies are seeking to regain ground as businesses increasingly look for AI systems that are cheaper and more customisable.
For Alibaba, the next challenge will be converting widespread model adoption into sustained commercial revenue through cloud computing, enterprise AI services and applications. The company has said it is increasing investment across the AI value chain, from proprietary chips and computing infrastructure to foundation models and AI agents. If Qwen’s developer ecosystem continues expanding at its current pace, Alibaba could strengthen its position as one of China’s leading competitors in the global AI infrastructure and software market.
