Sudan Preservationists Struggle to Restore Country’s Shattered Cultural Treasures

Sudanese preservationists are grappling with the immense challenge of restoring museums and archaeological sites devastated by more than two years of civil war. Over 4,000 antiquities remain missing, including nearly 700 pieces from Darfur, while key institutions such as Khartoum’s National Museum and the Republican Palace Museum suffered extensive damage during clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces. Reuters reported that local officials estimate the cost of restoration and security could reach 100 million dollars.

Among the cultural treasures lost or damaged are artifacts smuggled across borders and monuments of international significance. The Buhen Temple, dating back to around 1500 B.C., was damaged, while parts of the National Museum’s strongroom containing gold, religious relics and statues were looted. Even the museum’s courtyard, home to ancient temples relocated decades ago from northern Sudan, was scarred. Experts say many of the surviving pieces are in fragile condition and urgently need protection.

“The museum was extremely damaged. A lot of artifacts were stolen that are very, very important for us. Any piece in the museum here has a story,” said Rehab Kheder Al Rasheed, head of a committee assessing the damage and securing heritage sites in Khartoum State, in remarks reported by Reuters. Her comments reflect the scale of the cultural loss that has shaken the nation’s identity.

Efforts to recover and restore Sudan’s heritage remain constrained by limited resources, a fragile economy and ongoing insecurity. Foreign archaeological missions, once numbering around 45, have all suspended work. Authorities are appealing to UNESCO, Interpol and international partners for assistance in recovering stolen artifacts, financing reconstruction and safeguarding what remains of Sudan’s cultural memory, as reported by Sudan Tribune.
