South African Ports Hit Record Container Volumes Despite Infrastructure Hurdles

South African container ports recorded their strongest performance since the pandemic, moving 18,689 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in a single day, marking a new operational record, freight analysts disclosed in a report published by IOL. This milestone comes at a time when the logistics sector continues to face long-standing challenges around infrastructure and policy constraints.

The Southern African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) highlighted that the surge in throughput reflects the benefits of equipment upgrades, improved processes, and greater collaboration across the supply chain. Industry observers stressed that while efficiency has improved, structural bottlenecks remain a drag on long-term competitiveness, as outlined in coverage by Freight Trends Global.

In addition to the daily record, Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) reported handling 101,295 TEUs in a single week, surpassing a previous peak set in the 2017/18 financial year. This performance was attributed to the strategic deployment of new handling equipment and an expansion of working hours, industry sources revealed.

The gains provide a short-term boost for exporters and importers, with trade volumes benefiting from the improved operational capacity. Still, analysts warned that sustaining momentum will require accelerated infrastructure investment and private-sector participation to prevent future bottlenecks, a view reflected in reporting by Farmers Weekly.
