OPay expands ₦1.2 billion scholarship programme with new Google-backed innovation challenge

OPay has expanded its ₦1.2 billion 10-year scholarship programme and introduced a new innovation challenge in partnership with Google, deepening efforts to support education, digital skills, and technology innovation among Nigerian students. The initiative is expected to provide scholarships, mentorship opportunities, and innovation-focused support for young talents across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

According to The Guardian, the expanded programme aims to strengthen access to academic funding while encouraging students to develop technology-driven solutions addressing social and economic challenges. The newly introduced innovation challenge will reportedly focus on entrepreneurship, digital creativity, artificial intelligence, and problem-solving skills.

OPay said the long-term scholarship initiative forms part of its broader corporate social responsibility and youth empowerment strategy as digital finance adoption continues expanding across Nigeria. Analysts note that fintech companies are increasingly investing in education and technology development to help build future talent pipelines within Africa’s fast-growing digital economy.

Industry observers say partnerships between major technology and fintech firms such as OPay and Google reflect growing interest in supporting Africa’s innovation ecosystem through education, research, and startup development. They add that initiatives targeting students and young innovators could play a key role in shaping Nigeria’s future technology workforce and entrepreneurial landscape.
