Neon Sets Theatrical Release Date For Na Hong-Jin’s Cannes Sci-Fi sensation ‘Hope’

Neon has set a September 9 North American theatrical release date for Hope, the highly anticipated science-fiction thriller from acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline and News18. The film premiered in competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it quickly became one of the event’s most talked-about titles.

Set in the remote village of Hope Harbor, the film follows local police officers and hunters investigating a mysterious creature that unleashes chaos across the community. The star-studded cast includes Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Jung Ho-yeon, Hwang Jung-min, and Zo In-sung.

The film has generated significant international interest, securing distribution deals in more than 200 territories worldwide and becoming one of the most widely pre-sold Korean films in recent years. Critics at Cannes praised its ambitious blend of monster horror, science fiction, action, and mystery, though reactions were divided over some unfinished visual effects shown during the festival premiere.

Industry observers see Hope as one of the most ambitious Korean productions ever made and a potential global breakout hit for Neon. The distributor, which previously backed Palme d’Or winners such as Parasite and Anora, is betting that Na Hong-jin’s long-awaited return to directing will resonate with audiences far beyond the festival circuit.
