Hichilema Wins Second Term as Zambia’s Economic Recovery Faces New Test

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has secured a second five year term after winning the country’s August 13 presidential election, according to official results released by the Electoral Commission of Zambia, as reported by Reuters and AP News. Hichilema received 61.4% of the vote, or nearly 3 million votes, defeating his main challenger Brian Mundubile, who won about 38%.

Hichilema’s re-election extends the mandate of a government that has focused heavily on stabilising Zambia’s finances after its debt crisis and attracting investment into the economy. His administration has completed major debt restructuring efforts and promoted investment in the country’s copper industry, with the sector becoming increasingly important as global demand for critical minerals grows.

The result gives Hichilema another five years to convert those macroeconomic gains into broader improvements in living standards. Despite stronger economic indicators and increased mining investment, cost of living pressures, unemployment and concerns over the distribution of Zambia’s mineral wealth remained central issues during the campaign. His victory therefore provides continuity for investors while increasing pressure on the government to ensure the benefits of economic growth reach more households.

For businesses and investors, the second term will be closely watched for policies affecting copper production, mining investment, infrastructure, debt management and job creation. Hichilema has said he wants to double the size of Zambia’s economy, making the next five years critical to determining whether the country’s improving financial position can translate into sustained private investment and more inclusive economic growth.
