Taiwan Weighs New Cash Handout as AI Boom Drives Record Economic Growth

Taiwan is considering another NT$10,000 cash payment, worth about $314 per person, as President Lai Ching te’s government looks to share some of the benefits of an economy surging on artificial intelligence demand, Bloomberg reported. The proposed payment comes as Taiwan’s economy is forecast to grow 11.05% in 2026, its fastest annual expansion since 1987, with the government attributing much of the acceleration to strong global demand for AI chips and technology products.

The proposed handout would add to Taiwan’s recent use of direct cash support, including the NT$10,000 nationwide payment distributed in 2025. A separate proposal for another NT$10,000 distribution was under legislative consideration earlier this year. The latest push comes as Taiwan’s AI driven export boom produces exceptionally strong corporate and government revenues, while policymakers seek to ensure households also feel the impact of the expansion.

The policy has broader economic implications because Taiwan’s growth is increasingly concentrated around its semiconductor and AI supply chain. Exports are projected to rise 41.07% in 2026, while second quarter GDP growth reached 12.93%. For businesses, the stronger economy could support household consumption and domestic demand, although repeated cash distributions also raise questions about fiscal sustainability and whether temporary payments are the most effective way to spread gains from the AI boom.

For investors and companies, Taiwan’s exceptional growth reinforces the economic importance of its position in the global AI supply chain, but the government’s response will determine how much of that wealth feeds into domestic consumption and long term household prosperity. With AI demand expected to remain a major growth engine, the debate over cash support could increasingly shift towards how Taiwan converts a technology driven windfall into more durable household wealth.
