Nestlé Bets on GLP 1 Boom With New Nutrition Products for Weight Loss Consumers

Nestlé is turning the rapid growth of GLP 1 weight loss medicines into a new product opportunity, using artificial intelligence and nutritional science to develop foods and drinks tailored to consumers taking treatments such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound. According to Reuters, the company is studying the nutritional consequences of rapid weight loss and developing products designed to address issues including muscle loss and reduced nutrient intake. Nestlé’s chief technology officer, Stefan Palzer, described the emerging market as a major opportunity for the company.

The strategy builds on products Nestlé has already introduced, including Vital Pursuit, a range of portion aligned, high protein and fibre rich meals launched in the United States specifically for GLP 1 users and people managing their weight. The company is also developing products such as Boost Advanced Nutrition Shake and Milo PRO High Protein, while its scientists are using AI to analyse clinical research, identify nutrient combinations and accelerate product development. Nestlé’s Food Genie platform can analyse and optimise recipes using a database of about 120,000 recipes.

The shift is commercially significant for the global food industry because appetite suppressing medicines are changing consumer behaviour and raising concerns about demand for traditional packaged foods and snacks. Around 16 million Americans currently use GLP 1 medicines, according to Boston Consulting Group, with the number expected to rise significantly by the end of the decade. For Nestlé, developing products that prioritise protein, fibre, portion control and essential nutrients could allow the company to capture spending from a rapidly expanding consumer group rather than lose market share as eating habits change.

Nestlé’s approach reflects a broader transformation across the food and nutrition industry, with producers increasingly developing products around the needs of consumers using weight loss medicines. The company’s ability to convert its research into commercially successful products will determine whether GLP 1 nutrition becomes a meaningful new growth category, while the expansion of the drug market could create an increasingly important intersection between pharmaceuticals, food manufacturing and consumer health.
