Ethiopia unveils ambitious electric mobility roadmap to transform transport sector

Ethiopia has launched a national electric mobility roadmap aimed at transforming its transport sector, cutting emissions, and building a domestic clean-technology industry over the next five years, according to Business Insider Africa. The newly unveiled Ethiopia E-Mobility Strategy and Implementation Plan 2025–2030 outlines a nationwide transition toward cleaner and more sustainable transport systems.

The strategy focuses on expanding electric vehicle adoption, developing charging infrastructure, electrifying public transport, strengthening regulatory frameworks, and promoting local manufacturing and assembly industries. Ethiopian officials said the initiative is designed to reduce the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels while leveraging its vast renewable energy resources, particularly hydropower.

According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Ethiopia’s electric vehicle market has grown rapidly from about 7,000 vehicles in 2023 to a projected 115,000 vehicles by the end of 2026, positioning the country among Africa’s leading EV markets. The roadmap also includes plans for more than 2,000 charging points nationwide and incentives aimed at attracting private investment into the sector.

Industry analysts say Ethiopia’s aggressive push into electric mobility reflects a broader strategy to modernise urban transport, reduce fuel import costs, and establish itself as a regional leader in green industrialisation. Observers also note that the country’s renewable electricity advantage could make Ethiopia one of Africa’s most competitive clean transport markets if infrastructure expansion and electricity access continue improving.
