Dangote Refinery emerges as world’s largest jet fuel exporter amid global supply disruptions

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has become the world’s largest exporter of jet fuel, a major milestone that is reshaping global aviation fuel supply chains and strengthening Nigeria’s position in international energy markets. According to S&P Global Commodities at Sea data cited by Business Insider Africa, the refinery overtook traditional suppliers following disruptions linked to instability in the Middle East and uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz.

Shipment data showed Dangote Refinery’s jet fuel exports surged by about 770% within two years, rising from roughly 18,000 barrels per day in April 2024 to a record 158,000 barrels per day by April 2026. Europe emerged as one of the biggest destinations for the refinery’s aviation fuel as airlines and distributors increasingly sought alternative supply routes outside the Gulf region.

Reports from ThisdayLive and Punch noted that the refinery has exported an estimated 57 million barrels of jet fuel since operations began, supplying markets across Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Analysts say the refinery’s strategic Atlantic location has given it a competitive advantage by providing shorter and potentially safer shipping routes compared with traditional Middle Eastern suppliers.

BusinessDay says the development highlights the growing global importance of African refining capacity at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty and energy market volatility. Market observers add that the refinery’s rapid rise is accelerating Nigeria’s transition from a fuel-import dependent economy toward becoming a major exporter of refined petroleum products.
