Egypt’s national football team received a hero’s welcome after returning home from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with thousands of supporters celebrating the Pharaohs’ historic campaign despite their Round of 16 exit. According to Reuters and Associated Press, jubilant fans gathered at Alamein International Airport and lined the streets of New Alamein, waving Egyptian flags, singing patriotic songs, and holding banners reading “Egypt’s men made us proud” as the players and coaching staff returned from North America.
The Pharaohs produced the finest World Cup performance in the country’s history, securing Egypt’s first-ever World Cup victory and advancing to the knockout stage for the first time. Their remarkable run ended with a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina, a match that sparked debate over key refereeing decisions but also earned widespread admiration for the team’s resilience and attacking football. Captain Mohamed Salah was among the players warmly applauded by supporters, while head coach Hossam Hassan was praised for leading Egypt to its best-ever finish at the tournament.
Following their arrival, the squad travelled aboard an open-top bus through New Alamein, where cheering crowds celebrated the players before an official reception hosted by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) also announced that the contracts of Hossam Hassan and assistant coach Ibrahim Hassan had been extended until 2030, reflecting confidence in the coaching team after ending Egypt’s long wait for a World Cup knockout appearance.
Although Egypt fell short of a place in the quarter-finals, the team’s campaign has been widely hailed as a turning point for Egyptian football. Analysts say the Pharaohs’ historic achievements have reignited national pride, inspired a new generation of players, and strengthened belief that Egypt can become one of Africa’s leading contenders at future FIFA World Cups and continental tournaments.
