DRC Launches First-Ever Gold Refinery With 500–600 kg Monthly Output

The Democratic Republic of Congo has inaugurated its first gold refinery, marking a significant milestone in boosting local mineral processing, as reported by Business Insider Africa. The facility, named DRC Gold Refinery S.A., was officially opened in Kalemie, Tanganyika Province, on March 11, 2026, according to Business Insider Africa.

The refinery has a monthly processing capacity of 500–600 kilograms of gold, covering the entire value chain from raw gold intake to production of high-purity bullion bars. It was developed through a partnership between the state-owned DRC Gold Trading S.A. and Lunga Mining, reflecting government efforts to retain greater value from the country’s abundant mineral resources.

Authorities highlighted that the refinery will improve transparency and oversight in the gold sector, provide fairer pricing and better conditions for artisanal and small-scale miners, and reduce smuggling that has historically deprived the state of revenue. Plans were also announced to enable the DRC to become an exporter of 99.9 percent pure refined gold, further enhancing local beneficiation.

The launch represents a major step toward domestic value addition in mining, aligning the DRC with other African nations pursuing strategies to process more of their minerals locally rather than exporting them in raw form.
