Boxer Names Justin Galloway CEO-Designate as Profit Before Tax Rises 10.6%

South African discount grocery retailer Boxer has appointed Justin Galloway as chief executive officer-designate as the company prepares for a leadership transition alongside continued profit growth. The appointment, announced on October 12, 2026, will see Galloway succeed Marek Masojada, who is retiring after 33 years with the business. According to Bloomberg and the company’s regulatory announcement published through the Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s Securities Exchange News Service, Galloway will formally assume the CEO position on March 1, 2027, following a five-month transition period. Masojada, who became CEO in 2024 after serving as managing executive from 2019, will remain with the business until November 2027 to support the transition.

The leadership announcement coincides with improved financial results for the 26 weeks ended August 30, 2026. According to Boxer’s interim results published through the JSE’s SENS platform, revenue increased 6.3 per cent year-on-year to R24.1 billion, compared with R22.7 billion in the corresponding period. Trading profit rose 8.1 per cent to approximately R1 billion, while profit before tax and capital items climbed 10.6 per cent to R774 million. The retailer also reported net cash of R2.3 billion, excluding lease liabilities, up from R700 million at the beginning of March 2026. The results came despite pressure on household spending and continued selling-price deflation, with the company attributing its performance to operational discipline and efforts to maintain competitive prices.

Galloway brings more than a decade of experience at Boxer, having joined the company in 2012 and becoming a member of its executive team in 2020. A chartered accountant, he has held roles spanning finance, store operations and supply chain management, including leadership of the retailer’s distribution network. The company credited him with contributing to the development of its discount retail format between 2014 and 2020 and strengthening the logistics infrastructure supporting its expansion. His appointment comes as Boxer continues to benefit from demand for affordable groceries in South Africa’s cost-conscious consumer market. The challenge for the incoming CEO will be to sustain growth, protect margins and expand the retailer’s reach while maintaining its low-price proposition.
