China, Ethiopia Commit to Deeper Cooperation from Infrastructure to Artificial Intelligence

China and Ethiopia have agreed to deepen cooperation across a broad range of sectors, spanning infrastructure, trade and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, as both countries seek to strengthen their long-standing strategic partnership. The commitment was reaffirmed during talks in Addis Ababa between China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, with China pledging continued support for Ethiopia’s development priorities, according to Reuters.

During the meeting, Wang highlighted opportunities to expand collaboration in infrastructure development, energy, transportation and manufacturing, while also pushing for stronger engagement in the digital economy, e commerce and artificial intelligence. Chinese officials described Ethiopia as a key partner in Africa, noting that cooperation in technology and innovation would complement existing investments under broader development and connectivity frameworks, based on statements released by China’s foreign ministry and reported by state media.

Ethiopia, in turn, reiterated its commitment to strengthening ties with Beijing and expressed support for China’s core diplomatic positions, including the one China principle. Ethiopian officials said the country views China as a critical partner in accelerating industrialisation, upgrading digital capacity and supporting long term economic transformation, according to official Ethiopian government communications cited by Xinhua.

Analysts say the renewed focus on advanced technologies such as AI signals an evolution in China Ethiopia relations, moving beyond traditional infrastructure financing toward future oriented growth sectors. The expanded cooperation is expected to reinforce Ethiopia’s position as a regional hub for Chinese investment in Africa, while aligning with Beijing’s broader push to deepen economic and technological partnerships across the continent, according to regional policy analysts quoted by international media.
