US Targets Lobito Corridor Energy Gap to Strengthen Africa Critical Minerals Supply Chain

The United States is increasingly focusing on the energy infrastructure surrounding the Lobito Corridor as it seeks to secure more reliable access to Africa’s critical minerals, as reported by Business Insider Africa and CNBC Africa. The corridor links the mineral rich Copperbelt in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia with Angola’s Atlantic port of Lobito, providing a Western trade route for copper, cobalt and other strategic resources that are central to the global energy transition and advanced technologies.

The strategy reflects a broader recognition that transport infrastructure alone will not be enough to unlock the corridor’s full economic potential. Reliable electricity is critical for mining, mineral processing, industrial facilities and the development of new economic hubs along the route. The International Energy Agency has identified Africa’s energy gap as a major constraint on industrialisation and economic growth, while highlighting flagship infrastructure such as the Lobito Corridor as an opportunity to connect mineral development with wider economic activity.

Washington has already expanded its financial involvement in the corridor. In June, Zambia and the US Millennium Challenge Corporation agreed to redirect part of a $491 million grant programme toward infrastructure supporting both agriculture and critical minerals along the corridor. The African Finance Corporation, meanwhile, is developing the wider Zambia connection and is targeting financial close in the fourth quarter of 2027.

For the US, closing the energy and infrastructure gaps around Lobito is about more than moving minerals to Western markets. It is part of a wider effort to build alternative supply chains and reduce China’s dominance in critical minerals, while encouraging processing, investment and industrial activity in Africa. The corridor could therefore become a strategic platform for both mineral security and African industrialisation, provided investment extends beyond export logistics into reliable power, local processing and value creation.
