Tharisa Secures Nearly $300 Million to Advance Zimbabwe’s Karo Platinum Project

Tharisa has secured nearly $300 million in financing to advance its Karo platinum group metals project in Zimbabwe, strengthening the company’s push to develop one of the country’s major new mining operations, according to CNBC Africa. The funding is expected to support the development of the open pit mine and associated processing infrastructure, positioning Karo to become a significant contributor to Zimbabwe’s platinum production and export earnings.

The Karo project is located on Zimbabwe’s Great Dyke, one of the world’s most important geological regions for platinum group metals. Tharisa, which also operates the Tharisa platinum mine in South Africa, has been developing Karo as part of a broader strategy to expand its production base and capture long term demand for platinum, palladium and related metals used across automotive, industrial and emerging clean technology applications.

For Zimbabwe, the investment represents an important injection of foreign capital into a mining sector that remains central to the country’s export economy. Platinum is already among Zimbabwe’s key mineral exports, alongside gold, lithium and chrome, and expanding production could increase government revenues, create mining and construction jobs and strengthen the country’s position in global platinum group metals supply chains.

The financing also comes as competition for Africa’s critical and strategic minerals intensifies. Developing Karo could give Tharisa a larger foothold in the regional platinum market while providing Zimbabwe with additional capacity to capture more value from its mineral resources. The project’s progress will therefore be closely watched by investors as the country seeks to attract capital into large scale mining and expand mineral production beyond its established operations.
