Isaac Chukwu Udeh, popularly known as Chukwu The Painter, is redefining the possibilities of contemporary painting by transforming the act of creating art into a live performance. The Ghanaian painter, performance artist and live painter has built a distinctive identity around reverse painting, developing a technique that requires him to work with remarkable precision while painting upside down before revealing the finished portrait to his audience.
Born in Ghana in 1997, Chukwu developed his artistic foundation through his education at Wesley Grammar School in Accra before studying Commercial Painting at Takoradi Technical University. His professional journey began gaining attention through appearances and exhibitions at the Ghana Banking Awards in 2016 and 2017, before his work reached a wider audience through the MTN Heroes of Change platform in 2019. His recognition during this period established him as one of Ghana’s emerging performance painters and helped introduce his unusual approach to audiences beyond traditional art spaces.

Chukwu was recognised as Discovery of the Year at the 2017 EMY Africa Awards and was nominated for Influential Artist at the 2019 GUBA Awards. His international profile has continued to expand through TechBBQ in Copenhagen. In 2025, Chukwu performed live reverse paintings of prominent keynote speakers including Bjarke Ingels, Nicholas Thompson, Tomer Cohen, Dr Christyl Johnson and Larry Miller, working upside down before audiences during their sessions. He returned to TechBBQ in 2026, where he created three live paintings and had the distinction of painting His Royal Highness the Prince of Denmark during a Royal Reception. The opportunity placed a Ghanaian performance painter at the centre of an international technology and innovation gathering, demonstrating the ability of African visual art to travel across industries and cultural boundaries.
