China Accelerates Zero-Tariff Access for Nigerian Exports

China has announced it will fast-track zero-tariff access for Nigerian exports, a move expected to strengthen trade ties and expand market opportunities for Nigerian producers. The announcement came during a meeting between Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Yu Dunhai and Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar in Abuja, according to Business Insider Africa.

The initiative forms part of a broader Chinese policy offering zero-tariff treatment to 53 African countries for all tariff lines, as reported by Reuters. This development reflects China’s ongoing commitment to deepening economic partnerships across the continent and supporting African countries in diversifying their export economies, according to Nairametrics.

Ambassador Yu described the move as evidence that the China–Nigeria comprehensive strategic partnership has entered a “fast-track” phase. He emphasized China’s readiness to help Nigeria increase export volumes and bring more goods into the Chinese market duty-free, marking 55 years of diplomatic relations. Minister Tuggar welcomed the development and affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to aligning its industrial and trade policies with the expanded access, according to Trust Radio.

Trade analysts suggest the policy could significantly boost Nigeria’s non-oil sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, and solid minerals, by lowering export costs and improving competitiveness. They caution, however, that the opportunity’s success will hinge on Nigeria’s ability to scale production, improve product quality, and address logistical constraints, according to experts cited by Business Insider Africa.
