Egyptian restorers rebuild historic Cairo neighbourhood

Restoration teams in Cairo have begun an ambitious project to dismantle and reconstruct a centuries-old neighbourhood, aiming to preserve its cultural heritage while modernizing its infrastructure. The initiative involves carefully taking apart deteriorating structures and reassembling them using traditional materials and techniques to maintain architectural authenticity, according to Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

This project is crucial for safeguarding Cairo’s historic identity while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of residents,” said Heba Abdel Rahman, a senior official overseeing the programme, as reported by Al-Ahram.

International experts are collaborating with local artisans to ensure the preservation of intricate façades, stonework, and wooden lattice windows known as mashrabiya. The project has drawn attention from UNESCO, which recognizes Cairo’s historic districts as sites of global cultural significance.

According to Egypt Today, the reconstruction effort is expected to take several years, with phased relocations of residents and businesses planned to minimize disruption. Authorities stress that the project aims to balance heritage preservation with modern urban living needs.
