Vitol, Sunoco Ship First Dangote Gasoline Cargo to US

Global energy trader Vitol and American fuel distributor Sunoco have received the first gasoline cargo from Nigeria’s Dangote refinery headed to the United States, industry sources told Reuters.

The shipment marks a significant milestone for the $20 billion refinery, which is seeking to establish itself as a key player in global refined products trade. Market insiders cited by Argus Media noted that the cargo’s destination in the US underscores both the scale of Dangote’s output and growing international demand for alternative supply routes amid global market volatility.

Traders indicated the gasoline was purchased under a spot deal, but the move signals the potential for longer-term supply relationships between the refinery and US-based buyers. Energy analysts told Financial Times that this development highlights how Africa’s largest refinery could reshape trans-Atlantic fuel flows while reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imports.

Industry experts further stressed that securing international buyers like Vitol and Sunoco provides credibility to Dangote’s export ambitions, even as the refinery faces domestic distribution and pricing challenges.

The refinery, with capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, is expected to gradually ramp up production in the coming months, with more cargoes anticipated for both regional and international markets.
