Kenya is positioning its night skies as a new frontier for tourism, unveiling plans to develop astro-tourism as part of its broader strategy to diversify revenue streams from the sector.
The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) said it is working with local counties and international partners to design packages around stargazing, night safaris, and astronomical observation, leveraging the country’s clear skies and natural landscapes. A senior official told The Standard that astro-tourism could add significant value to existing wildlife and cultural offerings.
Tourism experts cited by Business Daily Africa noted that astro-tourism is gaining momentum globally, with destinations in Namibia, Chile, and Spain already attracting high-spending niche travelers. Kenya’s entry into this market, they said, could differentiate its tourism brand and attract visitors beyond the traditional safari crowd.
The initiative also comes as Kenya seeks to rebound from pandemic-era losses and strengthen its foreign exchange earnings. Figures reported by Nation Africa show that the tourism sector contributed about 10% of GDP in 2023, and officials believe astro-tourism can play a role in sustaining that growth.
Officials added that partnerships with universities and space research institutions are being explored to ensure the project is both commercially viable and scientifically engaging.
