The Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi is set to dramatically scale up its children’s surgical services with the creation of a new operating theatre and recovery unit. The expansion will increase the hospital’s annual capacity from roughly 200 to more than 2,000 pediatric surgeries, Business Insider Africa reported.
The initiative is being developed in partnership with Kids Operating Room (KidsOR), which emphasized that the new facility will not only treat patients but also serve as a training hub for surgical teams across East Africa. By embedding advanced pediatric surgical infrastructure, the organisation said the project will help strengthen long-term healthcare delivery in the region, as highlighted in updates from KidsOR.
Entrepreneur Carl Moon has committed significant funding support, pledging around $400,000 towards equipping and expanding the surgical unit. KidsOR publicly thanked Moon, describing the contribution as pivotal to enabling “life-changing surgical care” for children in northern Tanzania, as detailed in the organisation’s statements and Moon’s own announcements.
Installation work at KCMC is expected to commence later this year, with the hospital framing the project as a critical step toward improving access to specialized surgery and reducing preventable child deaths. Forbes coverage added that the initiative reflects a broader push to create sustainable healthcare models in Africa.
